My Van as it wasThe pictures you see on this page is my van as I have got it now. The van was originally a Devon Conversion (right) but I started to have problems with the roof (ie leaking in struts went on one side) so I decided to put a Dormobile roof on it. This would give me more headroom than the one I have got in. I got this from a bloke in Gloucester who was breaking up a VW and was selling the wardrobe and optional chairs for the Dormobile at the time, but when I got there I purchased the cooker off him and some other bits and pieces. I asked him what he was doing with the van after it had been stripped and he Inside Roof was sending it to the scrap yard, so I asked him for the roof of it and to my surprise he said I could have the roof for nothing along with the bunk beds, so long as I took it off myself. So the following day I set out with my Mother and all the tools I would need to do the job, and after 4 hours of non stop chiseling I finally got it. But the main problem was how I was going to get it home? because it wouldn't fit in the van. So I called on one of my mates at work Steven who borrowed a pick up van (not a VW) and he took me for it and brought it back home. (Thank You)
The next thing was could I fit it or would I make a pigs ear of it. I took the original roof off and then came to this big obstacle of welding a plate in the roof because the Dormobile roof is smaller than the Devon conversion. I then set out to go to the scrap yard and chisel the top off a panel van that they were breaking. Got home with it and cut it down to the right size, and welded it in no problem. When I started to fit the roof and allsorts were going through my mind like is it in the right place, will the canvas be slack or tight when I have finished, I hope I'm not going to get it twisted and will close in the right place. But when I finally got there it was absolutely bob on, and I'm glad I fitted it because it looks so much better than the other one I had and I have now over 8 feet of standing space
